Is it right to Boycott Archives?
5th October 2015. Rather unsettling stuff from the Guardian. It is one thing to call on universities to disinvest from oil companies, it is quite another to call on them to refuse to hold the archives of oil companies. The Guardian reports on a campaign to remove BP archive from Warwick university. See http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/oct/04/warwick-university-bp-archive-students-chancellor
This is a completely wrong-headed campaign. We need to preserve and make available archives for all sorts of things we don’t approve of as well as those that we favour. The BP archive will be just as useful to Green-minded historians as to their petrol-head colleagues, and we should allow them to use their judgement in analysing BP’s legacy.
I agree. I have spoken to both the BP archive and campaigners and I will be publishing a piece about this, hopefully, by the end today.
